Suicide Awareness Month
In recognition of National Suicide Awareness Month, the Dailonna Dozier Help Foundation joined the conversation on the importance of suicide prevention. We hosted a free webinar on this sensitive and important topic. Our guest speaker was Anita Joyner, founder of Where the Healing Begins, Inc. She discussed identifying warning signs and finding resources to help those at risk.
The reality is, suicide is a serious public health concern. According to the CDC, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. In some areas of the country, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among young people ages 10-24. The numbers are staggering. It's a complex issue with multifaceted causes, often stemming from mental health conditions, substance abuse, and difficult life circumstances. It is important to remember that suicidal thoughts and actions are not a sign of weakness. They are often a symptom of intense emotional pain and a cry for help.
If you are concerned about someone who may be contemplating suicide, here are a some warning signs to watch for: Talking about wanting to die or kill themselves; Expressing feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or being a burden; Increased use of alcohol or drugs; Withdrawing from friends and family; Giving away possessions; Sleeping too much or too little; and Sudden changes in behavior or mood.
If you notice any of these signs, please act now. You can find help at:
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: dial 988; Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741.
Every life matters! Let's continue to raise awareness, break down stigma, and offer support to those who need it most. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels loved, understood, and valued.
